How we vet liquidators

Estate liquidation is a trust-heavy business. The professionals you hire will photograph, price, and physically handle every object in a loved one’s home, then collect and remit payment over a sale weekend. Choosing the wrong firm can cost a family thousands of dollars in mispriced antiques, missing inventory, or post-sale clean-out fees that should have been quoted upfront.

Every liquidator in our directory is required to: (1) carry a valid business license in their primary operating state; (2) maintain general liability insurance with a minimum of one million dollars in coverage; (3) provide written contracts to estate clients before any work begins; (4) deliver itemized post-sale settlement statements; and (5) maintain a public-facing track record of completed sales. We re-verify these credentials annually.

The single most important step you can take is to interview at least two liquidators before signing a contract. A reputable firm will walk through your home for free, give you a candid honest assessment of what will and will not sell, explain their commission structure in plain English, and provide references from prior estate clients. Be cautious of any firm that pressures you to sign immediately or that quotes a flat fee without seeing the inventory.
